It is most recognisable for its dark vertical stripes on orange-brown fur with a lighter underside. It is an  apex predator , primarily preying on  ungulates  such as  deer  and  wild boar . It is territorial and generally a  solitary but social  predator, requiring large contiguous areas of  habitat , which support its requirements for  prey  and rearing of its offspring. Tiger cubs stay with their mother for about two years, before they become independent and leave their mother's  home range  to establish their own.

It is widespread in the  Indian subcontinent  and ranges across  Bangladesh ,  Bhutan ,  India ,  Nepal ,  Pakistan  and  Sri Lanka . The males of the northern subspecies have brown backs whose extent gradually reduces southwards, with the males of the southern subspecies having all-black backs. They are commonly found in open scrub areas and often seen running along the ground or perching on low thorny shrubs and rocks. The long tail is usually held up and the chestnut undertail coverts and dark body make them easily distinguishable from  pied bushchats  and  Oriental magpie-robins .

Muntjacs are thought to have begun appearing 15–35 million years ago, with remains found in  Miocene  deposits in France, Germany and Poland.Most species are listed as  Least Concern  or Data Deficient by the IUCN although others such as the black muntjac, Bornean yellow muntjac and giant muntjac are Vulnerable, Near Threatened and Critically Endangered respectively.

It is of  Old World  origins, breeding in southern  Iran  and east to the  Indian subcontinent ,  Burma , and  Sri Lanka . They are widespread and common but can be easily missed when they stalk prey at the edge of small water-bodies or even when they roost close to human habitations. They are however distinctive when they take off with bright white wings flashing in contrast to the cryptic streaked olive and brown colours of the body. Their camouflage is so excellent that they can be approached closely before they take to flight, a behaviour which has resulted in folk names and beliefs that the birds are short-sighted or blind

The species is often found singly, in pairs or small groups and are usually detected by their calls at dawn and dusk. There are two subspecies with the form found in the  Western Ghats  sometimes considered a full species.
