This is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. This distinctive stork is found mainly in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is greyish or white with glossy black wings and tail and the adults have a gap between the arched upper mandible and recurved lower mandible. Young birds are born without this gap which is thought to be an adaptation that aids in the handling of snails, their main prey. Although resident within their range, they make long distance movements in response to weather and food availability.

This species is very nocturnal but it can often be located by the small birds that mob it while it is roosting in a tree. It feeds mainly on large insects, frogs, lizards, small birds, and mice. The call is a repeated low soft, musical oo-uk ...ooo-uk... which may be heard at dusk and dawn.

                             बड़ा गरुड़ यह Stork परिवार Ciconiidae का सदस्य है, जो पहले एशिया के अलावा पूरे अफ्रीका और पूर्वी बोर्नियो तक पाया जाता था पर अब यह सिर्फ भारत के 2 क्षेत्रों भागलपुर एवं असम में और कम्बोडिया में ही बचा है। इस समय पूरे विश्व में इसकी आबादी मात्र 1200-1400 तक ही बची है जिसमें अब भागलपुर में 400-450 का अनुमान है।यहां पिछले साल 148 घोसले चिन्हित किये गये थे।  मुझे 1दिन में भागलपुर जिले के नवगछिया  प्रखंड अंतर्गत कदवा दियारा ( कोसी क्षेत्र) के विभिन्न कस्बों में 100 से ज्यादा घोसला दिखाई दिए हैं जिनमें गरुड़ बैठे हुए दिखाई दिये और आसमान में उड़ते हुए भी। ये अपने घोंसले मानव बस्तियों के बीच ही बनाते हैं।  कदवा गांव के लोग इसे भगवान विष्णु का वाहन मानते हुए इनका संरक्षण समर्पित भाव से करते हैं यही मुख्य कारण है कि यहां इनकी जनसंख्या बढ़ रही है।
